If you like chocolate orange, you are going to love these Chocolate Orange Truffles!

Chocolate orange is one of my very favorite flavor combinations! Something about rich, decadent chocolate paired with bright notes of juicy citrus just speaks to me.

Chocolate orange always reminds me of Christmas, too. When we were younger we would always get chocolate oranges in our stockings! Pulling out that gold foil wrapped sphere from the bottom of my stocking was always a Christmas morning highlight for me.

These chocolate orange truffles are kind of like the grown-up version of those chocolate oranges from childhood. Made with rich chocolate and rolled in orange-infused sugar, they are also wayyyyy more delicious.

What do I need to make chocolate orange truffles?

Chocolate orange truffles only need 5 ingredients! Here they are:

  • Chocolate
  • Heavy cream
  • Orange extract
  • Sugar- for rolling truffles
  • Orange zest- for orange sugar

What kind of chocolate should I use?

I recommend using dark chocolate for these chocolate orange truffles! Use a good brand that you like the taste of and would eat by itself.

If you're not a huge fan of dark chocolate, you can use milk chocolate too!

If you can, use chocolate bars instead of chocolate chips as chocolate bars don't contain the emulsifiers that chocolate chips do. But if chocolate chips is all you have on-hand, they will still work.

Orange sugar

Like I mentioned, these chocolate orange truffles get rolled in orange sugar. I love the beautiful sparkle it lends to the truffles. Plus, it gives them more orange flavor and a pleasant crunch on the outside!

Making orange sugar might sound complicated, but it's easy. All you need to do is add the granulated sugar and orange zest to a bowl, then rub the zest into the sugar with your fingers. The sugar will turn light orange, and all those delicious orange oils will be infused with the sugar.

How to make chocolate orange truffles

Making chocolate orange truffles is super simple and only takes a few steps. Here's how to make chocolate orange truffles:

First, chop the chocolate and add it to a heat-proof bowl. Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring in between. It's important to keep a close eye on the chocolate while you melt it, to avoid scorching it.

If you have only a few soft chunks of chocolate left by the end, and the rest is smooth, you can just stir them in until they melt instead of returning the chocolate to the microwave again.

Once the chocolate is melted, it's time to add the heavy cream.

Before you add the heavy cream in, heat it in the microwave until it's hot or at least very warm. If you add cold heavy cram straight from the fridge, the chocolate will seize and you won't be able to stir it.

Okay, now that you've made sure your heavy cream is hot, gradually whisk it into the melted chocolate, until it's shiny and smooth.

Lastly, add the orange extract and stir it in.

At this point, the chocolate orange truffle mixture is very liquid-y so now you need to put it in the fridge to firm it up. Chill the truffle mixture until it's firm, but still pliable, like fudge. You can also refrigerate it overnight. If after chilling, the chocolate is too firm to scoop, let it rest at room temperature until it gets a little softer.

Finally, roll the truffles into little balls. Use a spoon or a small cookie scoop to portion them out evenly. This part may get your hands a little messy!

Last but not least, roll the truffles in the orange sugar.

Recipe Tips

  • Instead of orange sugar, you can roll the chocolate orange truffles in cocoa instead
  • These chocolate orange truffles can easily be made ahead. Just freeze the final results to use in your holiday cookie boxes, or give away as gifts.
  • Again, make sure your heavy cream is hot before adding it to the chocolate!
  • You can roll the chocolate orange truffles in plain sugar, colored sugar, or even sprinkles! Get creative :)
